In the 1880s, the artist, designer and illustrator Elena Polenova (1850-98) began illustrating fairy tales that she noted down during her travels around Russian villages. The first of these was The Tale of Masha and Vanya. The original editions of some of these illustrated fairy-tales are now kept at Polenovo, the museum-estate of the artist's family, and this is the first English-language publication based upon Polenova's original hand-made drawings and typography. Sister of the landscape artist Vasily Polenov, and a leading member of the Abramtsevo circle of Russian artists, who engaged with peasant traditions and folklore towards the end of the nineteenth century, Elena Polenova is well known in Russia and abroad, but her illustrations for fairy tales have had little exposure. With a new translation, this beautifully crafted book is published to coincide with an exhibition in the UK of the artist's work.

In the early 2000s two albums of drawings were discovered in storage in the State Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg. Purchased by Catherine the Great in 1783, they had lain unnoticed for over 200 years. Hermitage curator Mikhail Dedinkin identified the artist as John Spyers, Capability Brown's draughtsman and surveyor for many of his most famous landscape designs. The drawings in the first album are exclusively of Hampton Court Palace and its parks and gardens, where Capability Brown was Chief Gardener to King George III for the last 20 years of his life. The second album contains a mixture of landscapes, architectural drawings and studies. This book reproduces all 149 drawings. It also includes another remarkable discovery: in the course of restoration for an exhibition at Hampton Court Palace in 2016 - the tercentenary of Capability Brown's birth - pencil drawings precisely mirroring the final watercolors were found beneath 14 of the pages. Catherine the Great was a passionate enthusiast for the English style in gardening and landscape design. Although she did not succeed in persuading Capability Brown himself to visit Russia, she would have drawn inspiration from these albums, particularly for her new English park at Peterhof, near St Petersburg. Now finally in the public domain, it is clear that the drawings of Hampton Court represent one of the most complete visual records of an historic landscape ever captured before the age of photography. In the early days Erté worked closely with the couturier Paul Poiret; he then took his remarkable talent to the stage, producing numerous designs for the revues and shows that were so popular at the time, as we well as to film with his work for MGM. Mata Hari, Lillian Gish, Anna Pavlova and George Balanchine were just some of those whose costumes were designed by Erté. Even when his fame dipped, Erté remained true to his life's work, continuing to create his wonderfully refined and delicate drawings, including the popular Alphabet series.

First English-language publication of a book that documents the creation of Moisei Ginzburg's NKTP Sanatorium in Kislovodsk - a modernist masterpiece that withstood the ideological pressures of the time The NKTP (People's Commissariat for Heavy Industry) Sanatorium was commissioned in 1934 by Grigory Ordzhonikidze, one of Stalin's closest allies and head of the Commissariat for Heavy Industry (he committed suicide after falling out with Stalin in 1937, the year of the sanatorium's completion). Despite the prevailing ideology that sought to outlaw modernism in favour of Stalinist neoclassicism, architect Moisei Ginzburg, with a team that included Ivan Leonidov, Evgeny Popov and Nikolai Paliudov, succeeded in creating an architectural ensemble that essentially retained it's modernist integrity and today remains a masterpiece of 1930s modernism - while making only minor concessions to the new Stalinist orthodoxy. In the early Soviet period, Kislovodsk in the northern Caucasus became known as a centre for health spas and sanatoria - "palaces of health for the workers". Ginzburg's sanatorium still functions as a therapy centre, and retains many of it's original features, including windows, light fixtures, some of the furniture etc. This first English-language publication of the original book documenting its creation is an important addition to the Ginzburg canon.

Moisei Ginzburg (1892-1946) was the founder of the Organisation of Contemporary Architects (OSA) group and lead architect behind the first Constructivist building ever built - the Narkomfin building in Moscow (completed in 1932), which is currently being restored by the architect's grandson, Alexei Ginzburg. As part of this unique project, Ginzburg Design Limited has initiated the publication in English of Moisei Ginzburg's four seminal works on architecture and the built environment. The third of these, Dwelling, is published by Fontanka in English for the first time, in a facsimile of the original Russian edition. Ginzburg's first book, Rhythm in Architecture (1923) was quickly followed by Style and Epoch (1924) - the publication that came to be seen as the Constructivists manifesto, and which was hugely influential in terms of architectural theory, with parallels to Le Corbusier's Vers une architecture. Dwelling, published in 1934, was written just two years after the completion of the Narkomfin building and provides a fascinating insight into the architect's ideas about creating new housing for the socialist city, communal living, and the use of new materials and technologies.
