Unnoticed by the international art world until recently, the Karakalpakstan State Museum of Art - located in Nukus, Uzbekistan - houses the second largest collection of Russian avant-garde art in the world (after the Russian Museum in St. Petersburg). This extraordinary museum is the life's work of Igor Vitalievich Savitsky, a Russian painter born in Kiev who first visited Karakalpakstan in 1950 as a member of the famous Khorezm Archeological & Ethnographic Expedition led by Sergei Tolstov. Subsequently, having moved from Moscow to Nukus, Savitsky began collecting the works of the Russian avant-garde - including those by such well-known names as Falk, Mukhina, Koudriachov, Popova, and Redko - whose paintings were banned during Stalin's rule and through the 1960s because they did not conform to the officially prescribed Soviet 'socialist realism' school of art. The current English language publication, already issued in Russian in 2011, helps make the Savitsky Collection accessible to a broad international audience for the first time.

The very first photographs of Japan were fascinating to the Western world, causing a wave of enthusiasm in the 1870s and 1880s, which then found expression in art, culture and society. One of the first Europeans in the middle of the nineteenth century to travel the externally isolated country was the renowned photographer and war correspondent Felice Beato. The photographs he created from the 1860s are now published for the first time and are complemented by works of other photographers. And thus a unique picture of the native Japanese culture is portrayed, showing the Japanese feudal state in one-off portraits, landscapes and architectural photographs prior to the transition from the Edo to the Meji period (1868). The impressive collection of these earliest pictures trace back to the Swiss diplomat Aime Humbert (1819 1900), who traveled Japan in 1863/64 and negotiated the first amity and commerce treaty between the two states.

Evert Nijland (b. 1971) is one of the leading jewellery artists of his generation. Trained in the Conceptual Art and Minimalism of the 1990s at the Gerrit Rietveld Academie in Amsterdam, he developed a flamboyant and exuberant style, which drew on (art-) historical resources yet is thoroughly anchored in the present. A typical characteristic of Nijland is working with a variety of artisans. It enables him to integrate such diverse materials as porcelain, wood, textile or steel into his works. Jules Cheret (1836 - 1932) is considered the father of modern posters. Through the use of colour lithography he developed commercial posters into an independent art form and contributed to the transformation of the urban image of the art metropolis Paris with his enormous production of colour posters and advertising art. The effect of his work wasn't only noticeable in public spaces, but artists like Henri Toulouse-Lautrec also consequently adopted the medium and developed its visual language further. As a lithographer, printer, designer, painter, decorator and illustrator, Jules Cheret was a prominent figure in Parisian art and literary circles at the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th century. This publication focuses on his pioneering poster art, which covers a wide range of subjects from circuses, concerts and exhibitions to ready-made fashion, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals and press products, thanks to the increased demand brought about by the liberalisation of the media, the development of the rail network and the upturn in economy and trade. Jules Cheret developed a striking individual style in the neo-rococo tradition, but that also displayed the first modern elements which were to fascinate impressionists like Georges Seurat.

Meisen silk was produced in Japan from the late nineteenth century and became particularly popular between 1910 and 1940, when meisen patterns blurred the line between fashion and art. Meisen was an innovative, quick and cost-effective dye and weaving method with the effect of labour-intensive and multicoloured traditional kasuri ikat fabric. The meisen kimonos that were produced en masse were the first affordable ready to wear kimonos. Designed by a young generation of Japanese textile designers who synthesised classic Japanese design with the influence of Western design movements, the patterns still look fresh and original today and represent a little known study in textile design of the early twentieth century. As eminent fashion garments, meisen kimonos would be replaced with the next new fashion after just a season or two. Thus many of them were stored in excellent condition and were even passed down as heirlooms. In recent years they have resurfaced and are now enjoying the high esteem bestowed on them by collectors.

With his residential buildings, office blocks, schools and factories, Boris Velikovsky (1878-1937) made a definitive contribution to Russian avant-garde architecture. Creating furniture as sculpture, defined by abstract composition, designer-craftsman Paul Evans (1931-1987) consistently pushed boundaries with his innovative approaches to metal work and furniture-making, his designs revealing the fascinating juxtaposition of sculpture and design. Constantly experimenting with traditional and synthetic materials while also borrowing techniques from industrial manufacturing, Evans and his shop workers invested their furniture with an expressiveness that is quite distinctive in the realms of traditional craft and design.

The Hoffmeister Collection is one of the best and most extensive private collections of antique and historic Turkmen knotted carpets in Western Europe and America. It competes alongside important collections from Western museums as well as those in Russia and Turkmenistan. With almost 200 objects - among which are distinguished carpets and bags - artistic excellence and historical significance come together. As one of the first to do so, Hoffmeister has determined the age of these knotted works of the Turkmen with the aid of radio-carbon techniques. According to the results from the science and technology university ETH in Zurich, the earliest pieces of the collection originate from the sixteenth century. Both the cultural significance of the collection and the scientific and artistic value of its pieces are discussed in this book. The readers can really sense the texture of these knotted wares through the brilliant photography, which carry them away on a journey into the lost world of the Steppes folk of Central Asia.

In the 18th century pugs found their way onto the laps of noblewomen and, with this, into the portraits of contemporary rulers. Small and forever panting, the pug could not be put to use as a watchdog or a herding dog, but it compensated for this with it's charm. The dog ultimately found it's way onto porcelain and faience. Johann Joachim Kandler, the most significant modeler of the Meissen porcelain manufactory, designed over 60 variants of the pug between 1740 and 1760 - standing, lying, scratching, and performing tricks. Kandler portrayed the pug belonging to Count Heinrich von Bru hl in a splendid one-off, but he also produced models for serial production. This southern German collection comprises over 150 ceramic pugs as well as other dogs. Moreover, they do not just appear individually; they may also be part of a courtly scene or decorate wares in the gallant style - accessories such as flacons, (snuff) boxes, and walking-stick handles.

"Nordic Design. The Response to the Bauhaus" deals with Nordic countries reaction to the Bauhaus and the German modern age. The late 1920s saw a new design form celebrating it's first successes across the Nordic countries. Finland's singular living conditions had an equal influence on the new design vocabulary alongside the postulate formulated in Sweden: "Beauty for everyone", or the Danish preference for handicrafts. The respective characteristics of the Nordic countries gave rise to a highly autonomous interpretation of functionalism. It was not the avant-garde form that stood in the foreground, as was very often the case in Germany, but the tailored solution to any given task. Through this, Scandinavian functionalism succeeded in becoming the constant that defined the identity of the Nordic nations.

Jewelry Stories highlights the Museum of Arts and Design's unique, world-class collection of studio and contemporary art jewellery from the US, Europe, Australia, and Asia, a medium that comprises one third of it's permanent collection. Artists working in this field create jewellery rooted in sculptural experimentation and the concept of art as a wearable medium. The pieces featured represent the history of art jewellery as told from a largely US perspective. In Israel East meets West. Their jewelry traditions blend, resulting in creative innovations. In the 1930s, European immigrants introduced the spirit of the Bauhaus, while oriental craftsmanship was invigorated in the 1950s and 1960s by immigration from Islamic countries. State jewelry companies preserved traditional crafts, while at the same time developing a new and elegant style, designed to express the national identity of the still young state of Israel. There are important links between native jewelry makers and European and American jewelry artists, who were guest lecturers at the Bezalel Academy of Art and Design in the 1970s and had a lasting influence on Israeli artists. The transition to art jewelry was finally completed in the 1980s, paving the way for artists who are now internationally renowned. The jewellery artist Konrad Mehus has held an important position in Norwegian art since the end of the 1960s. In his works artistic intention and content play a more important role than practical usage and function. Mehus's objects significantly stretch our notion of what jewellery can be: it is not merely adornment, but rather a means of communication. With silver as a material and jewellery as a medium Mehus tells stories with social relevance and political wit. A language rich in metaphors and symbols is characteristic of the artist: Coca-Cola lids refer to changing consumer behaviour in times of globalisation. Gilded valium packets represent the increase of psychological illnesses in society. Konrad Mehus is concerned with commentating contemporary topics and trends. His works are characterised by humour and warmth, but also by irony and taking a personal distance.

Tadema Gallery was founded in 1978 by Sonya and David Newell-Smith in London's famed Camden Passage in Islington. A hundred years after the death of Amedeo Modigliani (1884-1920), the time has come to re-examine the artist's controversial place in Modernist art history. By examining a select group of outstanding originals, this recent study celebrates his best work through advances in our understanding of the painter's techniques. This focused analysis of the artist, which centres on his maturity as a sculptor and painter, includes characteristic examples across Modigliani's major genres, especially portraiture and female nudes. It is argued that Modigliani was the last great Italian Old Master, moving as he did between Renaissance and Modernism.
