Unnoticed by the international art world until recently, the Karakalpakstan State Museum of Art - located in Nukus, Uzbekistan - houses the second largest collection of Russian avant-garde art in the world (after the Russian Museum in St. Petersburg). One of the first Europeans in the middle of the nineteenth century to travel the externally isolated country was the renowned photographer and war correspondent Felice Beato. The photographs he created from the 1860s are now published for the first time and are complemented by works of other photographers. And thus a unique picture of the native Japanese culture is portrayed, showing the Japanese feudal state in one-off portraits, landscapes and architectural photographs prior to the transition from the Edo to the Meji period (1868). The impressive collection of these earliest pictures trace back to the Swiss diplomat Aime Humbert (1819 1900), who traveled Japan in 1863/64 and negotiated the first amity and commerce treaty between the two states.

The jewellery artist Konrad Mehus has held an important position in Norwegian art since the end of the 1960s. In his works artistic intention and content play a more important role than practical usage and function. Tadema Gallery was founded in 1978 by Sonya and David Newell-Smith in London's famed Camden Passage in Islington. They were successful photo-journalists who ventured into the field of 20th century abstract art and the decorative arts of the 19th and 20th centuries. By 1982 they had discovered a passion for artist-designed jewellery and showed in the gallery an eclectic choice of jewels from significant designers of the Revivalist, Art Nouveau, Arts & Crafts, Jugendstil, Art Deco, and Modernist movements. With over 500 unique jewellery pieces from the 1860s to 1960s, the book reflects the 40 year history of the gallery and the superb eye of it's inspirational founders.
