This catalog explores the early work of Marc Chagall (1887–1985), forged as the artist was pulled between two different worlds. The book begins with Chagall’s breakthrough years in Paris, 1911 to 1914, and the paintings in which he combined his memories of Russian folk art and provincial life with the cutting-edge stylistic experiments he was exposed to through his life in the center of the Parisian avant-garde. When World War I broke out during a visit back home, Chagall was forced to spend the next eight years in Russia. Walker Evans (1903-1975) remains one of the most important and influential photographers in the history of the medium. His career spanned the emergence of the modern mass media in the 1920s to the full acceptance of photography as an art form in the 1960s and 70s. Many of Evans individual images have become landmarks in both the history of photography and the social history of that era. Without Evans the development of photography would have been very different, particularly in North America. Where the mass media enjoyed celebrity culture, Evans photographed anonymous citizens. Where the mass media promoted consumerism, Evans valued enduring objects and the persistence of the past in the present. Evans series "Labor Anonymous", published in Fortune magazine in November 1946, displayed pictures of walking workers, taken against a featureless wall, on a Saturday afternoon in Detroit. Ludwig Mies van der Rohe (1886-1969), one of the 20th century's most important architects, created numerous montages and collages between 1910 and 1965 that are fascinating illustrations of the design principles of his architecture. These works, most of them large-format, are far more than merely sketches that accompanied his creative process as an architect. They are works of art in their own right that show Mies van der Rohe's structural vision in its purest form. Like almost no other visual art technique, collage and photomontage reflect the aesthetic principles, the zeitgeist, and the attitude to life of Modernism. At the beginning of the 20th century, war, revolution and industrialization caused a shift in the way the modern world and progress were experienced and perceived, a shift that found expression in equal measure in newspapers and magazines, in visual and performing arts. Collage and photomontage were also soon being used in architecture. Influenced by Dada, Constructivism, and De Stijl, Mies van der Rohe exploited these new techniques - to a far greater extent than most of his contemporaries - to visualize his creative ideas on New Building (Neues Bauen).

In 1965, The New York Times called Tokyo-born, New York-based Fluxus artist Yoko Ono "a one person culture explosion". In this generous volume, Ono presents instruction pieces from 1961 to the present, including three scores from her iconic 1964 artist's book, Grapefruit--"Drinking Piece for Orchestra", "Bicycle Piece for Orchestra" and "Painting to Be Slept On" -which are republished here for the first time. Ono has explained the origin of these works: "sometimes for financial reasons, sometimes for technical difficulties, I could never realize all the ideas which were literally bombarding me. But now, I could just write instructions. It freed me". Also included are more than 100 drawings from Franklin Summer, a series begun in 1994, comprising 1,400 inkblot drawings on paper, and Vertical Memory (1997) - dedicated to Ono's father - a photograph in 21 parts depicting a distorted face. The piece, which Ono considers her best, is a culmination of her life's work.

In 1988, Gerhard Richter created one of the most controversial and fascinating political painting-cycles of all time, with his Baader-Meinhof series. In 2002, he returned to the theme of media and political truth with his artist's book War Cut. For this project, Richter photographed 216 details of his abstract painting "No. 648-2" (1987), and, working on a long table over a period of several weeks, combined these 4 x 6-inch details with 165 texts on the Iraq war, published in the German Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung newspaper on the dates of the war's outbreak (20 and 21 March 2003). "My method was to attach a number of texts to a number of images without having to think about whether something would be better positioned to the left or the right, above or below", Richter told an interviewer, for a New York Times feature on the publication. "I placed these images so that a connection develops in terms of colours, structures and other characteristics... Some images match the cruelty and the madness described in the texts shockingly well. And others can even serve as illustrations when the texts speak of deserts and other landscapes". Originally published only in German in 2004, this long-awaited English version of this important artist's book presents Richter's powerful attempt to accommodate the extremity of war. For this edition, Richter applied the same process of text selection to The New York Times, using the same dates of the war's outbreak.

Chuck Close immediately liked the idea of a book without words. As a child, his severe dyslexia stood in the way of reading, making images all the more important. To this day, he remembers a visual encyclopedia from his early years and the feeling of being overtaken by the intensity of it's pictures. The idea was also compatible with Close's ongoing interest in revealing the process of his work, which he accomplishes largely through visual presentation, using very few words, if any. Scribble Book: Self Portrait is a self-portrait that emerges step-by-step out of the printing process, one plate and one color at a time. The viewer follows a series of 9 individual plate proofs along with a corresponding series of 9 progressive proofs. By comparing the plate proofs against the progressive proofs, the viewer may ascertain not only the effect as one color is added to another to create the final 9-color etching, but also the compositional decisions and careful modifications made by Close at each stage of the project.
