The prominent architect Felix Novikov was born in 1927, when the famous Constructivist Konstantin Melnikov was at the peak of his career. Novikov tells the dramatic story of Soviet architecture, portraying the conditions he worked in and how he collaborated with the government and other participants during the creative process. He further explains how Soviet design and planning institutes were organized with reference to the Union of the Architects of the USSR and describes the creative ideals of his generation of architects, who are today identified as Soviet Modernists. As a time witness, his memories cannot be recounted in their whole complexity by historians. Novikov also describes some of the conditions that affected his own creative fate and that of others. This book reflects the characteristics of Soviet life and its connections to architects’ professional activity. Novikov’s confessions are more than that of an architect; they give a testimony to daily life in the Soviet Union from Stalin to glasnost.

The prolific architectural legacy of Delhi is remarkable not only for it's antiquity but also its diversity. While the period of antiquity encompass various types of Hindu, Islamic and Colonial architecture, it is modern architecture that laid the foundation of post-independent development of the city. Today, the city has been engulfed by an explosion of the built environment. One has to search for the forgotten or obscure jewels of architecture. Over 3,000 churches were built in Poland between 1945 and 1989, despite the socialist state's hostility towards religion. We call this Day-VII Architecture. Built by parishioners from scavenged or pinched materials, the churches were at once an expression of faith and a form of anti-government protest. Their fantastic designs broke with the state's rigid urbanism. Neither legal nor prohibited, the construction of churches during this period engaged the most talented architects and craftspeople, who in turn enabled parish communities to build their own houses of worship. These community projects eventually became crucial sites for the democratization of Poland. Unearthing the history of these churches through photography and interviews with their designers, this publication sheds new light on the architectural dimension of Poland's trans formation from state socialism to capitalism.

While in other Soviet cities and republics monumental mosaics became common in the 1960s, in Moscow mosaic was used for art-deco works and social realist 'pictures'. The entire history of Soviet art is thus reflected in Moscow's metro stations, palaces of culture, military museums, hospitals, schools, and prefabricated houses. Today, many of these works are disappearing before our eyes, victims of destruction or dismantling; the majority are not listed as under state protection, and a great number of their authors are unknown. This book collects 140 Soviet-era mosaics and arranges them in chronological order. It contains four main sections - Art Deco, Socialist Realism, Modernism, and Postmodernism - and includes a list of 295 mosaics that have been identified. This guide shows well-known works by Aleksander Deyneka, Pavel Korin, Boris Chernyshev, Evgeny Ablin, Yury Korolev, and Leonid Polishchuk side by side with mosaics by artists whose names were for a long time absent from the history of art and architecture. The idea for it came from American photographer James Hill, who spent three years seeking out and photographing works of Soviet monumental art that have not received the attention they deserve and that in the post-Soviet period have often been dismissed as propaganda.
