The prominent architect Felix Novikov was born in 1927, when the famous Constructivist Konstantin Melnikov was at the peak of his career. Novikov tells the dramatic story of Soviet architecture, portraying the conditions he worked in and how he collaborated with the government and other participants during the creative process. He further explains how Soviet design and planning institutes were organized with reference to the Union of the Architects of the USSR and describes the creative ideals of his generation of architects, who are today identified as Soviet Modernists. As a time witness, his memories cannot be recounted in their whole complexity by historians. Novikov also describes some of the conditions that affected his own creative fate and that of others. This book reflects the characteristics of Soviet life and its connections to architects’ professional activity. Novikov’s confessions are more than that of an architect; they give a testimony to daily life in the Soviet Union from Stalin to glasnost.

As the byproduct of the Cold War, the space race produced a considerable number of objects disseminated in networks, not only in the East and West but also in the global South rockets, launching pads, satellite tracking stations, astronomical observatories, and several other pieces of design, machineries and infrastructures. As they stand today, these objects are remnants of a modernity tied to secrecy, war deterrence, and mass media associated to outer-space politics. By bringing together the work of photographer Petr Antonov, architect Philipp Meuser, designer Hugo Palmarola, and historian of science Asif Siddiqi, this book comes from a conference held at the Princeton University School of Architecture in March 2016 on technology and the Cold War, contesting the historiographical status of these objects in order to give value to the manner in which they came to construct current modes of subjectivity and social relations.

The German Architecture Annual, published by the Deutsches Architekturmuseum (DAM) in Frankfurt am Main, has been documenting the architectural events taking place in Germany for almost 40 years. This year's annual presents a number of interviews with distinguished authors who discuss 22 buildings in Germany shorlisted by a jury for the DAM Prize for Architecture in Germany 2018. In order to make this selection, curators of the museum as well as prominent architects and architecture critics visited around 100 buildings that were nominated for this year's award. The 2018 edition of the annual presents the shortlisted works in greater detail in addition to giving special recognition to the winner of the DAM Prize. The Elbphilharmonie, being an exceptional project, was not eligible for the award but receives a special mention. A separate chapter is dedicated to buildings designed by German architects abroad, two of which are presented in this issue. The book also features two essays. One explores the model used in Hamburg for allocating land, designed to support joint building ventures. The other explores the current boom in architecture for theatre and music venues.
