The Akademie der Kunste (Academy of Arts) in Berlin has carried out it's task of promoting the arts in Germany since the year it was founded in 1696. From the outset, master builders have been eligible to become members. The architect Hans Scharoun laid the groundwork for establishing the architectural archive. As the first post-war president of the academy in West Berlin, he was eager to document twentieth-century architecture in the Archive. Besides the story lying behind the assembly of a collection, this publication presents all seventy-one archives and eighty collections, including short biographies of the originators and the nature and scope of inventories. The Preussische Akademie (Prussian Academy) is represented among other things by drawings by Friedrich Gilly from the end of the eighteenth century. Expressionist designs by Bruno Taut, Alfons Anker, Paul Goesch and Adolf Behne in particular are to be found in rich abundance. In common with the archives of Richard Ermisch, Paul Baumgarten and Thilo Schoder, these offer a chronicle of the 1920s. One focus of the collection is devoted to the archives of Second World War emigre architects, among them Adolf Rading, Gabriel Epstein, Julius Posenerand Konrad Wachsmann. The post-war period and the booming 1960s are represented by the archives of Hermann Henselmann, Walter Rossow, Bernhard Hermkes, Werner Hebebrand, Werner Duttmann and Heinz Graffunder. Archives and collections which can be traced back beyond the turn of the twenty-first century emerged from Jorg Schlaich, Kurt Ackermann, Szyszkowitz + Kowalski and Valentien + Valentien. On offer for the first time is an overview in print form of these archives acquired by the Academy up to the present day - archives of architects, engineers, landscape architects and architectural photographers and critics alike. This publication presents an excerpt from around half a million documents.

This new publication is a comprehensive study of Soviet Modernism in Ukraine. The authors and architects, Oleksiy Bykov and Ievgeniia Gubkina, have studied modernism in architecture in depth over many years. In this 250-page book, they explore the uniqueness of modernist objects in all it's forms - from interior design to city plans - across the entire territory of Ukraine and over three full decades. Furthermore, this title explores the differences between the main concepts in the debate on late Soviet architecture, in which the term "brutalism" has, until now, been understood as a western phenomenon.

The "new urban municipality of Berlin", also called Greater Berlin, was created 100 years ago, on 1 October 1920, following a ground-breaking administrative reform. This was a century-defining milestone that transformed Berlin into a world city. The old city of Berlin was merged with 7 other cities, 59 rural communities, and 27 estate districts. As a result, the city's area increased from 66 to 878 square metres, it's population from 1.9 to 3.9 million people, virtually overnight. But Greater Berlin did not remain a fixed entity. After the fall of the Berlin Wall, new planning and development projects continued to transform the greater urban area, which has grown, seemingly without end, far beyond the boundaries of Berlin. The two volumes of "Unfinished Metropolis" are dedicated to the past and future of Greater Berlin. The first volume offers an insight into an array of different topics, such as Berlin's role as the capital of Germany, it's relationship with Brandenburg, and the historical, economic, and social conditions that have driven the growth of the urban area over the centuries. The second volume delves deeper into the designs for the future. It comprehensively documents the International Urban Planning Competition for Berlin-Brandenburg 2070, held by the states association of architects and engineers. It also explores how other European capital regions - London, Moscow, Paris, and Vienna - are seeking to ensure sustainable urban development in years to come.
