The Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art's collection of "Dada and Surrealism" is regarded as one of the best and most complete in the world: it features masterpieces by artists such as Max Ernst, Rene Magritte, Joan Miro, Paul Delvaux, Yves Tanguy, Alberto Giacometti and Marcel Duchamp. The collection is also rich in archival material, ranging from letters and manuscripts to artists books featuring unique drawings and inscriptions. The collection is rich thanks to two major sources: Roland Penrose (1900-1984) and Gabrielle Keiller (1908-1995). A celebrated British artist, author and close confidant of Picasso, Penrose was also a collector, assembling one of the greatest collections of early twentieth century cubist and surrealist art. Gabrielle Keiller was a collector and friend of Penrose, who had connections with Scotland. Part of Penrose's collection and Keiller's whole collection were acquired almost simultaneously by the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art in 1995.

British realist art of the 1920s and 1930s is visually stunning - strong, seductive and demonstrating extraordinary technical skill. Despite this, it is often overshadowed by abstract art. This book presents the very first overview of British realist painting of the period, showcasing outstanding works from private and public collections across the UK. Of the forty artists featured in the show, many were major figures in the 1920s and 1930s but later passed out of fashion as abstraction and Pop Art became the dominant trends in the post-war years. In the last decade their work has re-emerged and interest in them has grown. Interwar realist art embraces a number of different styles, but is characterized by fine drawing, meticulous craftsmanship, a tendency towards classicism and an aversion to impressionism and visible brushwork. Artists such as Gerald Leslie Brockhurst, Meredith Frampton, James Cowie and Winifred Knights combine fastidious Old Master detail with 1920s modernity. Stanley Spencer spans various camps while Lucian Freud's early work can be seen as a realist coda which continued into the 1940s and beyond. This revelatory book concentrates on Scottish women painters and sculptors from 1885, when Fra Newbery became Director of the Glasgow School of Art, until 1965, the year of Anne Redpath's death. It explores the experience and context of the artists and their place in Scottish art history, in terms of training, professional opportunities and personal links within the Scottish art world. Celebrated painters including Joan Eardley, Margaret Macdonald Mackintosh and Phoebe Anna Traquair are examined alongside lesser-known figures such as Phyllis Bone, Dorothy Johnstone and Norah Neilson Gray, in order to look afresh at the achievements of Scottish women artists of the modern period. The book accompanies a show which will be held at the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art Two in Edinburgh from 7 November 2015 to 26 June 2016.

"Witches and Wicked Bodies" provides an innovative, rich survey of images of European witchcraft covering from the sixteenth century to the present day. It focuses on the representation of female witches and the enduring stereotypes they embody, ranging from hideous old crones to beautiful young seductresses. Such imagery has ancient precedents and has been repeatedly re-invented by artists over the centuries, to include scenes with corpses and cauldrons, caverns and kitchens, and the dead being raised through demonic or satanic rites - all inversions of an ordered and religious social world. Petherbridge introduces this fascinating subject and includes catalogue entries on each of the exhibited works. The illustrations primarily feature drawings and prints as well as a group of important paintings. A wide range of artists is represented including Durer, Goya, Fuseli, Blake, Burra and Rego.
