This is a magnum opus exploring the relationship between art and theatre during the long nineteenth century. This book was conceived to accompany an international exhibition that travelled from Marseille to Rovereto and Toronto. The exhibition aimed to connect elements of the modern tradition with the return to interest in Antiquity that emerged in Europe during the period 1750-1800, fuelled by the discovery of Pompeii and the pioneering theories of Adolphe Appia and Edward Gordon Craig regarding the dematerialization of the stage. This triggered a surge of passion for theatrical performances and for theatre in general. The period begins in the time of Voltaire and Jacques-Louis David and ends with the last vestiges of Symbolism, a century and a half during which European painters took a continuous interest in the parallel development of stagecraft. Alphonse Mucha was an extraordinarily prolific and versatile artist who made his mark in the diverse fields of design—including posters, jewelery, interior decoration, theater, and packaging and product designs— as well as in painting, book illustration, sculpture, and photography. Ferr himself said of this somewhat neglected side of his oeuvre: intended as a decorative element of clothing, my jewelry becomes a tool for its interpretation, for a subjective and individual reading of the garment. If clothing is an object - the "thing is worn" then jewelry is the expression of the way, of "how it's worn". Louise Bourgeois, who has produced art since the 1930s, began in the 1990s to use her clothes and the clothes of her loved ones as components in her sculptures and drawings. It is as much a reincarnation of her past and her childhood as a confirmation of her relationship with memory. Her visual approach to fabrics transforms decorative accessories into emotional and personal references which, especially in her Cells and later in her drawings, create representations of a tormented and at the same time powerful womanhood. Further development of the artists work began in 2002: exploiting the iridescent colours and formal structural properties of pieces of her clothing, she created The Fabric Drawings, astonishing works alternating between floral figurative pieces and chromatic abstractions. This set of images is collected here in its entirety for the first time, constituting the closest thing yet to a general catalogue.
