Space Packed: The Architecture of Alfred Neumann is the first critical monograph on the work of the Austrian-born modernist architect Alfred Neumann (1900-1968). Based on an exploration of his writings and a close study of his built and unbuilt projects, it unveils and analyses Neumann's approach to architecture in the context of post-war modernism and the establishment of the State of Israel from 1948 onwards. Rafi Segal's book brings to attention again this highly significant, yet largely forgotten figure who contributed vastly to establishing modernism in Israel and who had a lasting impact on the new country's architectural culture. At his time, Neumann was equally renowned and controversial for his original designs that differed from modernist mainstream. Space Packed is divided into four chapters that discuss the development of Neumann's architectural theories, methodologies, and built work during the 1950s and 1960s, against the backdrop of contemporary architectural discourse and the nation-building demands of the new state of Israel. It also features a chronologically-organised and illustrated catalogue of Neumann's buildings and designs, including a vast number of previously unpublished photographs, drawings and sketches.

Fashioning Kimono focuses on 150 Japanese garments dating from the late nineteenth to the early twentieth centuries, taken from the renowned Montgomery Collection, which includes informal women's and men's kimono, haori jackets, under-garments, ceremonial/formal clothes, and children's robes. Some of the designs reflect historical continuity, but many others evince a radical break from the traditional. Themes and designs from Western art predominate over historical Japanese references, illustrating the modernisation and Westernisation of Japan at this time. The range of the collection represents one of the most dynamic periods in Japan's national costume. It encompasses the final phase of the living kimono - when kimono was still the daily wear of most Japanese people. After Japan's defeat in the Pacific War and the destruction of virtually all it's major urban centres, Western clothes quickly came to replace the kimono, being considered more affordable and conducive to the new post-war lifestyle. It eventually took on a purely ceremonial or formal role, and today - except for the few fashionably daring - the kimono is worn mainly for the tea ceremony, funerals, and weddings.

C'est alors que sont nés les villages alpins et que l'économie montagnarde traditionnelle a acquis ses principaux caractères. Les communautés paysannes des Alpes ont été d'abord des associations informelles de familles, de voisins et d'usagers d'alpages dont l'origine se perd dans la nuit des temps. Entre le XIe et le XIIIe siècle, elles ont été à la fois structurées et encadrées, sous l'effet de la mise en place du réseau paroissial, de l'essor de la seigneurie et de la colonisation systématique de la haute montagne. La famille apparaît comme la première des communautés alpines, et le recours principal face aux difficultés des temps. Avec la christianisation en profondeur des Alpes, la paroisse, relavée par les confréries, est devenu un des cadres principaux de la vie locale. Les hautes vallées apparaissent comme des terres de dissidence, mais aussi de chrétienté. Depuis le XIIIe siècle, les sources documentaires permettent de bien connaître l'économie agro-pastorale, et de reconstituer les processus communautaires extrêmement élaborés qui régulent l'exploitation des alpages et la répartition des ressources naturelles, singulièrement le bois, l'herbe et l'eau. Jamais au Moyen Age les Alpes n'ont été immobiles, ni fermées sur elles-mêmes. A partir du XIVe siècle, les communautés montagnardes ont été confrontées aux Etats princiers en construction. Beaucoup sont restées en liberté surveillée. D'autres, au contraire, ont été à l'origine de constructions politiques ambitieuses, dont la Confédération helvétique est l'exemple le plus célèbre. Mais cette dernière doit être replacée dans un cadre plus général: du Tyrol à la Savoie et de la Vénétie à la Provence, on trouve des modèles très divers de relations entre les communautés et les pouvoirs supérieurs. De manière vivante et claire, cet essai fait la synthèse de plusieurs centaines de publications savantes en quatre langues, à la lumière des acquis récents de l'histoire rurale en Europe.
